Dumpster Size Guide

Compare our roll-off dumpsters side by side, see how big each one really is, and pick the right size for your project. Not sure? Choose a little bigger: it costs less than a second dumpster.

Dimensions are typical and vary a little by hauler. A pickup truck load is a full-size truck bed filled level, about 2.5 cubic yards. Your price, rental days and included disposal weight are on your quote, because they depend on your area.

How to choose the right size

Your project

One room or a small cleanout: 10–15 yard. A whole-house cleanout, large remodel or roof tear-off: 20 yard. New construction or a major renovation: 30–40 yard.

Your debris

Concrete, dirt, brick and rock go in a 10 yard only. They're so heavy that a bigger dumpster would be too heavy to haul. Shingles are heavy too, so check the weight on your quote. What can go in?

How much

Count pickup truck loads: one level, full-size truck bed is about 2.5 cubic yards. Add about 20% for bulky items that don't stack, like furniture.

Where it goes

Every size is about 8 ft wide. Measure the spot: the dumpster plus a few feet on each side, and room for the truck to back in (see below).

Room for delivery

A roll-off truck sets the dumpster down by sliding it off the back, so it needs space:

  • About 60 ft of straight, clear room for the truck to back in and lower the dumpster.
  • About 23 ft of overhead clearance: no low wires, tree branches or roof overhangs above the spot.
  • About 10 ft of width for the dumpster and its doors.
  • Firm, level ground. On soft grass or after rain, the truck can leave ruts.

Size questions

Most home projects fit a 10 to 20 yard. A 20 yard is the most popular: it handles a whole-house cleanout, a large remodel or a roof tear-off. Use the chart above, or answer a few questions in our quote form and we will suggest a size.

No. Heavy materials like concrete, dirt, brick and rock go in a 10 yard dumpster only, because a bigger one would be too heavy to haul safely. If your project has a lot of both, you may need a 10 yard for the heavy material and a second dumpster for everything else.

It depends on the size and your area. Your quote shows the included tons. Anything over that is billed per ton after pickup, at the rate on your quote.

Keep everything level with or below the top rail. An overfilled dumpster cannot be hauled safely, so you would need to lower the load or pay the overfill fee on your quote.

Yes. Ask before your pickup date and we will extend it if the hauler is available. Extra days are billed at the rate on your quote.

Contact us before delivery and we will change it. After delivery, we can swap it for a different size; a swap is a new delivery.
