What Can Go in a Dumpster

Most project and household debris is fine. A few things need our approval first, and some can never go in. Heavy materials have their own rules.

Allowed

Construction and remodel debris
Wood, drywall, flooring, cabinets, packaging, doors, windows, siding, fixtures
Household junk and furniture
Furniture, household junk, garage and estate cleanouts, toys, clothing, carpet
Yard waste
Branches, brush, leaves, landscaping waste, fencing, small stumps
Roofing
Asphalt shingles and roofing tear-off, felt and flashing. Heavy: check the included tons on your quote.
Concrete, dirt, brick and rock
Allowed in a 10 yard dumpster only. See the heavy debris rules below.

Ask us first

These need our written approval before they go in, and may need special disposal.

  • Appliances: Especially anything with Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners).
  • Tires: Usually need separate recycling.
  • Electronics: TVs, computers, monitors and other e-waste.
  • Anything you are not sure about: Ask before you load it. It is easier than taking it back out.

Never allowed

  • Hazardous waste and chemicals
  • Asbestos
  • Paint, solvents, oil and fuel
  • Batteries
  • Flammable materials, propane tanks and explosives
  • Hot ashes
  • Medical waste
  • Liquids
  • Anything illegal to put in a regular landfill

The hauler can refuse a dumpster with these items in it. Any special disposal, cleanup or fines they cause are billed to the renter (rental agreement, section 5).

Heavy debris rules

  • Concrete, dirt, brick and rock go in a 10 yard dumpster only. They are so heavy that a bigger dumpster filled with them would be too heavy for the truck to lift and haul safely.
  • Heavy loads need our approval (rental agreement, section 3). Pick "Concrete, dirt, brick or rock" when you book and we'll set you up with the right container.
  • Mixing a little is fine. If a general or cleanout load has more than about 5 wheelbarrows of concrete or dirt, we'll suggest a separate 10 yard for the heavy material.
  • Roofing shingles are heavy too. Choose your size by weight as well as space, and check the included tons on your quote.
  • Weight over the included tons is billed per ton from the disposal scale ticket, at the rate on your quote. Loads too heavy to haul safely may need to be partly unloaded.

Loading tips

Keep it level with the top.

Nothing above the top rail. An overfilled dumpster can't be hauled.

Spread the weight.

Put heavy items on the bottom and spread them evenly from front to back.

Break things down.

Flatten boxes and take furniture apart so more fits.

Use the door.

Walk heavy or bulky items in through the swing door, and close it before pickup.

Don't move it.

Never push or drag the dumpster, climb into it or burn anything in it.

Keep the path clear.

Cars, gates and debris out of the way on pickup day, or a return-trip fee may apply.
